Delray Beach Golf Course Slated for a $27 million Renovation!
So many of us Delray residents are excited to have a nice golf course to play. Delray Beach is a worldly-known destination spot. When people visit and like to play golf, let's leave a good impression! And for the locals, well, you have waited long enough. My name is Barry Frette and I live on the golf course and I play golf. Thank you City of Delray for stepping up and making this happen, we all appreciate it.
We are so excited about the city and what they are going to do with our golf course. The latest meeting was held on April 24th, 2025 at the golf course. City Manager Terrence Moore and Director of Parks & Recreation Sam Metott hosted the meeting along with close to a dozen city officials, including the Mayor of Delray Beach, Tom Carney, the CFO, Henry Dachowitz, Director of Utilities, Hassan Hadjimiry, several commissioners, and staff from the golf course.
The plan is to shut down the entire golf course for a period of one year starting in November of December of 2025. Sanford Ferris Golf Course Design is overseeing the architectural design and renovation. He said they are going to open up the golf course by clearing out all unwanted and unneeded evasive and exotic trees and plants growing everywhere, and they will also clear out the ponds of all plants growing along the sides, etc. making it look far more appealing. All the grass and non-native and unhealthy vegetation will be removed, and the soil will be evaluated and treated. New landscaping and vegetation will be planted. Included in the $27 million will be renovations to the clubhouse as well, and expanding the outdoor bar/dining area.
Mr. Sanford said they are going to strip all of the grass and plant new grass, and will reshape and design the course, along with all of the sand traps. The new grass will be a combination of sodding and seeding. Trees, fairways, roughs and greens will be seeded or sodded according to the most modern golf course requirements. Bunkers will be returned to the original designs. According to the City of Delray Beach's Director of Utilities, Hassan Hadjimiry, we currently have 9 raw water wells on the golf course which will be staying, however, we will have all new drainage and irrigation installed throughout the course so that 100% of the course is covered. They will also build a state of the art maintenance facility to keep up with the ongoing maintenance of the golf course, along with new restroom/water facilities on the course.
Another promising note, they will be moving the driving range back to the entrance road, and angling it more towards the left away from the houses. They also said we will have beautiful landscaping all along the west side of the driving range. I, Barry Frette, personally asked them about the area along Homewood where you can see the 2nd hole. Currently, it's all overgrown and looks awful. They said that is all going to be cleaned up. That's fabulous news for those that live along Homewood.
The cart barn will be repaired, bathrooms will be updated and restored, and the parking lot will be completely redone. The north bridge to the maintenance area will be repaired and the south bridge will be completely replaced. Cart paths will be installed completely throughout the course! And lastly, we are getting a big, beautiful new sign!
They will be paying for the renovation through a revenue bond issuance with most likely a 30 year term.

A note from Jay Alperin:
"Note that the south nine is to be restored close to the original Donald Ross plans. The north nine are modified to flow more efficiently. Thanks to Kris Moylan for the information. My conversations with City officials indicate that the funding will come from a Revenue Bond and the numbers are far from determined. The plan as of now is to be underway less than a year from now."
Some highlights of their plan:
- Six basic tees create six different courses, so the golf course will be longer and more difficult from the black tees than from the white, blue, red, green and gold tees.
- Most advantageous landing areas are indicated by the black dots, and these areas are generally the most difficult tee shot, but rewards the successfully executed shot with an easier approach shot to the green or second landing area.
- All holes meet the USGA standards for minimum yardages.
- All tees, greens, fairways and immediate rough to be 100% irrigated by an automatic sprinkler system.
- Hole layouts are conceptual.
The Donald Ross south course and Dick Wilson's north course will be restored. There will be new and improved practice facilities, all new irrigation & drain system, new cart paths and cart crossings on the Donald Ross south course, removal of all exotic shrubs and plants, new maintenance facility and restroom/rain shelter upgrades.
