Discover the art of Nerikomi, a traditional Japanese hand-building technique that creates striking patterns using colored clay. Derived from the words “neri” (to mix) and “komi” (to press), this method layers and compresses clay into patterned blocks. Thin slices are then cut from these blocks and arranged into repetitive or abstract motifs to craft one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces.

In this two-day workshop, students will:

• Day 1: Learn to combine two colors of clay and build their own patterned block.

• Day 2: Slice the blocks into slabs and transform them into trays, plates, or vessels, bringing their designs to life.

Meet the Instructor: Sofia Vidal

Sofia Vidal holds a Master’s degree in Ceramic Design from Musashino Art University in Japan, where she trained under renowned professor Makoto Komatsu. She furthered her studies across Asia, including Jingdezhen, China, where she supported the Artist-in-Residence program at the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute.

Upon returning to Peru, Sofia taught ceramics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and collaborated on government projects with local artisans to develop innovative ceramic designs. In 2011, she opened her own ceramics studio, specializing in functional pieces that embody both artistry and accessibility. Deeply inspired by Asian culture, Sofia views pottery as a joyful art form that connects people and celebrates the beauty of everyday life.
